#153: The One About Backing Yourself

The One About Backing Yourself

Firstly, Happy February, everyone! We made it!

Secondly, it seems like we all have “awards” on the brain, it being ‘Awards Season’ and all.

(And I don’t know about you, but I also have this👇iconic moment on the brain. It’s currently living rent-free up in there! It’s golden!)

We’ve been talking all about awards here at We Edit Podcasts, too.

FUN FACT! Did you know there are a whole bunch of awards programs for podcasts? We wrote a whole post about it! You can check it out below! 👇

And in light of that, in this week’s Founder’s Corner, Carli dives into why and how you should back YOU! And how to get comfortable with the idea of nominating yourself. It’s got so much food for thought…

…I’m still processing! But in the BEST way!

But it got me thinking…Why are we often hesitant to try new things? Like, for instance, throwing our name in the ring when it comes to podcast awards?

And I’ve come to the conclusion that one of the main factors is that we’ve been conditioned to believe, that in every situation, especially those of a more competitive nature, there’s only winning and losing. One person emerges the winner (AKA Ryan Gosling! 😍) and the rest lose. But more than that, we’ve also been conditioned to believe that not winning is somehow embarrassing?!

But honestly, I’ve come to realize that’s simply not the case. For three key reasons:

(I will forewarn you that there are A LOT of cliches in this one. But at the end of the day (whoops!), they’re cliches for a reason. And they REALLY help me prove my points. So just ‘grin and bear it’ okay?! 😉)

Cliche Reason #1. You either win or you learn.

It’s actually that simple. And it works for every area of your life. Whatever you put your hand to, you either win or you learn. Either you’ll win that award for your podcast, OR you’ll have gained bucket loads of experience and exposure, met some cool people, and you’ll have strengthened your podcast’s brand identity. That doesn’t sound like losing to me!

Reason #2: You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

Again, we can’t be so afraid of losing that we don’t try in the first place! Because then you’re definitely losing. And there is also no learning taking place. And that’s what I call a lose-lose!

Reason #3: Better to have tried and failed (learned!) than never to try at all!

So you don’t win? So your idea doesn’t quite go according to plan? So your project didn’t take off quite like you intended? You know what? SO WHAT! As P!nk would say, “You’re STILL a rockstar!” Why? Because you tried!

So don't count yourself out...because you'll never know unless you try!😉

Founder's Corner

As we head into awards season, I've been getting stuck on one question.

"Why are some more likely to apply for awards than others?" 🧐

Now you might reason that perhaps they believe they are better qualified to apply, or maybe they have a bigger community to support them in the awards process.

But what if I told you that most award-winning entrepreneurs and podcasters got their prizes by simply nominating themselves as candidates?

Okay, so maybe nominating yourself isn't something you are quite comfortable with. Then let me give you this one challenge...

Ask yourself this:

"What kind of bigger impact could you make as a recognized expert?"

Yes, you heard that right. You could be making MORE of an impact in this world simply because you are a RECOGNIZED expert. 🏆

"Awards, funds, and recognition are a form of currency. In the world we live in, they matter. They are bargaining chips!"

Now, let's look at four keys to help you get more comfortable with the concept of "nominating YOU"! 👊

1. Find the right mindset

The first step when taking on a new challenge is always to get into the right mindset. It's time to find a way to get comfortable with nominating yourself!

In fact, become your own biggest advocate. And definitely don't silence your inner cheerleader.

When you have the right mindset, you can achieve so much more. It's not bragging, it's building up your currency and adding value into the world.

It's time to leave your mark, and don't get left behind!

2. Know your story.

If you're going to advocate for yourself, then it's crucial that you know your story. If people don't know about you, it's because you're not telling them your story.

Now, whether it's your podcast story or your business story, become so involved with it that you live and breathe it!

As I mentioned last week - be about it! Read more on that here.

It's your responsibility to know your origin story, understand how it can help others, and learn to package it in a way that it appropriately nominates YOU!

3. Be visible.

As with anything, if you want to nominate yourself you have to continue to position yourself as an expert in your field.

Show up! Whether on your podcast, or on your blog, or perhaps in your newsletter. Give great advice, and give it often.

Of course, part of this visibility includes building your brand alongside your business. Stay tuned as we dive into this more in future editions. For now, remember to optimize your online presence and be visible to those who matter.

Which means...

4. Collaborate.

Time and again, collaboration is one of the best tools you can have in your toolbox. Although perhaps these partnerships may be with competitors, it also BUILDS your network. And again, it makes you visible!

So what does this look like?

Start by collaborating with other experts and authority figures. Next, attend industry events and conferences to network with organizers and experts.

You could even take on the challenge of offering to speak at these events. And always ask yourself: "How can you bring value to others?"

► Want to know what events are coming up this year? Get the scoop here!

After you've implemented all four keys, you are now set up to successfully nominate yourself for the reward you've always had your eye on!

So go out there, be your best cheerleader, and nominate YOU!

Until next week!

Happy podcasting! 🎧

The One About Taking Action Carli and I were doing some “serious business brainstorming” the other day. And at some point in the “very serious brainstorming”, we rabbit-holed (as you do) down a path that led to, at the time, a very natural follow-up question, “So, what’s your go-to karaoke song?” FUN FACT: Carli’s is “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood. (Classic!) Mine is Vanilla Ice’s “Ice, Ice Baby”. 🧊 Less classic. I know. But, for whatever reason, many moons ago, I had this brainwave...

The One About Hot Takes So, I recently did something a little different over on The Podcast Digest…I wrote a post where I shared one of my biggest podcasting 🔥hot takes🔥! 😬 Wanna know what it was? ALL podcasts should be edited! 🫢 Yip. I said it. (And whether you agree ✅ or disagree ❌, you can read the full post below!) The One About Confidence Let’s start with a little honesty circle. If you had to rank yourself on the Confidence Scale, where would you place yourself? Had you asked me this question a couple of months, heck, even a couple of weeks ago, I would have definitely placed myself on the lower end of the scale. 🫣 But why? Where did my confidence run off to? I certainly don’t remember signing any permission slips… Which made me realize, if we didn’t give it away, we’ve probably been conned out of our...
